Don’t follow your Passion

You don’t create a life first and then live it. You create it by living it.

The idea that everything you are supposed to do has to fit into this ‘passion’ is unrealistic.

do not loan money to someone, following their passion. Loan it someone who wants to start a business more boring, the better.

Success filled passion. More than Passion filled success.

I needed something to do to be paid. If you are not going to be paid for doing something, you’re going to be there very long. But this idea that I have to know what I am suppossed to do now, I’m suppossed to pursue this passion, is really bugging. That’s because of the dangerously limiting idea at the heart of everything we believe about success or life in general. And it’s that you have one singular passion and your job is to find it and to pursue it to the exclusion of all else. And if you do that everything will fall into place and if you don’t , you fail.

The pressure starts really young and it goes your whole life and it is perhaps more pronounced when you ae graduating. The world will be -‘Wow! what are you gonna do now? ‘ and it is so intimidating and it is like picking a major for life.

It is intimidating, it is a forceful cultural imperative to choose your passion. It is really streesful and it is not me, everyone I talk to agrees with me.

I’m weary of passion for few reasons, and one of them is that – Passion is not a plan. It is a feeling and feelings change; yes they do ;- you can be passionate about a person one day, a car, your job and then not passion at the next. We know this and we continue to use as the yard stick to judge everything by instead of seeing passion for what it really is.. The fire that ignites when you start rubing sticks together.

When someone asks you at a party, a gathering or at a job interview – ‘What are you passionate about?’ The fear is that you’re not going to have this wow compelling answer and that means you’re not interesting, or ambitious, or that you don’t have that singular obsession or that scary talent that you’re hiding. And that your life isn’t worth living. It’s not true.

Passion is not a job, a sport or a hobby. It is full force of your attention and energy that you give to whatever is right in front of you. And if you’re so busy looking for this passion, you could miss oppurtunities that change your life. You could also miss out on a great love. Because thats what happens when you have tunnel vision, trying to find the One. We all think we know the kind of person we are and the kind of person we could love. But sometimes, we’re wrong.

Somrtimes, you don’t know what you’re going to do next. I love not knowing what i’m going to be doing five years from now. That’s okay. It is okay not to know. You know why? Beacuse the most fulfiling relationships, the most fulfiling careers are those that still have power to surprise you. And as for the things you know you want to do? You want to write a book, you want to start a business, you want to change careers ? Great !But if you’re sitting around waiting for passion to show up and take it, you’re going to be waiting a long time. So don’t wait. Instead, spend your time and attention in solving your favorite problems. Look for problems that needs solving. Be useful, generous. People will thank you, hug you and pay you for it and that’s where passion is. Where your energy and effort meets someone else’s need. Thats when you realise: passion lives,  in realising what you have to contribute.

As you know, the entire college industry has sprung up helping people find their passions. Books, coachings, webinar and so on.
